Timing belt meaning

Timing belt definition

A toothed belt driven by the crankshaft and operates the camshaft . It causes the valves to open and close at the proper time. When an engine is rebuilt, it is important to line up the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket before applying the belt. When the belt breaks, often a valve will remain open and be hit by the rising piston causing the valve to bend and other internal damage.
