1. Indicates if the pole shoes are so magnetized as to make current low in a direction compatible with the direction of flow as set by the battery .2. Indicates if the end of a magnet is the North or South pole (N or S).
3. Indicates if the battery terminal (either one) is positive or negative (plus or minus) (+ or -).
